Opera!

As you probably all know I'm a big supporter of Firefox. But since my work is dealing with web technologies that constantly evolve here is some exiting news about an Opera browser.

Version 9 of this very fast and feature full browser came out several days ago. It's considered the fastest browser on the market but that's not the most exiting news for me.

They pass "Acid Test 2" !!! The second browser in the world (after Safari) to pass this test. For those who are not familiar with it the test was designed to use whole bunch of web standards technologies.

Btw, IE7+ looks like Opera 4 when it runs the test. And Firefox does not fully support SVGs and a couple of rules so it's almost there in terms of the result.

Firefox Cheatsheet.

Extremely usefull for both new and experienced users. I thought I knew all shortcuts but apparently not (Ex: Back -> Shift + Scroll Down).

Try it out. It really makes a difference once you start using it.

Introducing BumpTop - 3D Desktop

This presentation displays an awesome prototype for windows called BumptTop. It's a prototype for a 3D desktop that's supposed to be more lifelike and allows you to handle your desktop just like you handle your real life desk by piling your documents in normal piles, or piling windows, or even "folding" stuff and pining it on the "side wall" and much much more. Check it out!

World Cup continued

I had to start a new post for this. Ah, sweet revenge, even though I didn't throw a single stone. I haven't been out here hype-ing the US, I don't think they are great. But the irony and the hard record (assuming the blog stays up :p ) of all of your hating comments is too hard to pass. Mika, since you and I were just having a nice conversation, you are excluded.

Ahhh, it is so nice that all of you (namely denis & Goga) get to sit back now and eat your words!!!! Ha-haaaaa!!!! We just tied one of the powerhouses in Europe. AND we were down a man for the 2nd half.

I will accept apologies by the way, although I do agree that the commentating is totally biased and way off when it comes to US.

Goga, did you catch Ghana today?....hmmmm Can we talk again about the toughest group? Please, just admit when you're wrong. Name a tougher group.

All I know is that we still have a chance (although a very slim one after watching Ghana today) to come out of the group. And that is assuming that Italy will beat Czech.

By the way, did I mention you all came to the US to live? Freedom of speech (may be a new concept for you) is great I know, but come on, show a little respect to your gracious hosts. Is it really that hard for you to hope that the USA does well?

With love,

-maximus

P.S. This is a very over the top tongue-in-cheek posting and is not meant to be offensive to some of my favorite people. :->

Randall on ESPN

So I don't know how many of you have ESPN/ESPN 2, but you can see me playing basketball against the best streetballers in the country in the AND 1 mixtape tour. LOL it was a pretty fun thing, I was one of 3 ppl chosen out of 500 to be on the opponent team, but of course we're just there to be props for the real stars. Fun all the same. Check me out in a couple of weeks when the Salt Lake City tour stop airs.

PDF on Firefox

So how do I get my PDF files that I click on Firefox to open? I messed with plug-ins and looked for extensions, but couldn't find anything. You guys know? It opens a new tab like it is supposed to but then it's just blank and I have to paste the address into IE to get the file. Help!

World Cup in ASCII?

Forget HDTV (high definition), watch the World Cup 2006 in a whole new perspective - ASCII! ascii-wm.net offers two mirrors that you can telnet to and watch the world cup games in ASCII format. It appears that so many people enjoy this service that I wasn't even able to connect because there were too many connections already :( To check it out simply telnet to any of these two mirrors by opening up a terminal(*nix or Mac) or command prompt(windows):

telnet diego.ascii-wm.net 2006
or
telnet ascii-wm.net 2006

Did you guys see Beckham's bend on the goal against Paraguay? Although they didn't play that well overall, it was a beautiful shot and they got the win.

More on us vs. big brother on the internet

I know I might be pushing our whole talk on conspiracy and the "big brother" theory to the extremes, but I ran into this article and thought it wasn't bad at all. Just in case you never know (: It discusses how one can further make the internet browsing more anonymous/safe (and what do you know email encryption is one of them hehe). I know most of us aren't worried about this kind of things, but I like to keep myself informed in case I ever do need to take some measures. Anyways here's the link:

Google Spreadsheet

There are many different online office programs but almost none of them are integrated in a suite. Google finally released the first progam in their office set: Google Spreadsheets. Word competitor is going to launch pretty soon too (Google Writely).

The spreadsheets are very fast and allow you to do pretty much everything you could do in your favorite Excel (axcept for Graphs but it's coming too). But lets put that aside. The most important and exiting thing about this new product is that it allows the user to share his/her spreadsheets with others (allow to edit or just view). Me and bla played around with that feature and it's amazing (you even have a little chat window where you can discuss what you're doing).

I personally really like the idea of Web 2.0 Office (I know I just said The Curse Word) and if some of you are the same as me you will really like it as well.

And to sum that up... IT'S FREE !!! :) (No need to pay for MS Office anymore [like anybody did anyway])

P.S. If anybody need to try it out then just tell me and I'll invite (they are in limited beta and general invitations might be out by now).

Google browser sync extension for firefox

This extension really intrigued me when my friend Dan showed it to me. Google just created an extension that allows you to synchronize your browser information like tab session, stored passwords, bookmarks, history, (you name it!) between your computers. So for example if you have multiple computers that have different bookmarks, or you just found a bunch of cool websites, you dont have to go and email yourself those links to remember them when you get on your other computer, you simply synchronize them with this extension! Same goes with history, stored passwords, etc.

It's a bit of an issue with the stored passwords since you'd have to becareful what computers you synchronize your info to. In fact this is in the FAQ section if you want to check it out. Anyways here's Google's page for the extension with more details:

The seldomly heard side of things

We have all heard the women's rules when it comes to men like "don't leave the seat up" or "don't forget our aniversary" and so on. However what about the other side? What about the men's rules! For once lets reverse the sides and put down the rules from the men's prespective!

apples and ipods

so i just bought a 30 gig ipod, but i have to tell you the story of how it came to be, lol, you'll love it.

My wife has wanted a new laptop for a while, so we've been shopping online and otherwise. Well, she decided she wanted a Mac. So we brought it home, and we start to install [try to install] all the stuff she needs on it to run her business. (Adobe Creative Suite 2, Trade Manager, TradeCenter (stock)) - all from legal sources of course such as The Pirate Bay.

But those necessary programs have not been developed for Mac, or else haven't been developed for the new Intel processor that Macs started using as of Feb of this year. So you have 2 options (both of which suck) to get the programs:

1. Download (buy) an emulator that allows .exe files to work but that run at snail speed, or

2. Download the new Apple Bootcamp which basically allows you to partition your hard drive and run Windows XP on one partition. But the problem with Bootcamp is that it is only still in Beta version, and some teeny-tiny issues still exist like....NO VOLUME CONTROL!!!..or...SORRY! SOME KEYS ON THE KEYBOARD DON'T WORK!!!. In other words, it sucks.

So of course, we tucked our tail between our legs and raised the white flag and tried to return the lappy to Apple. Keep in mind this is less than 48 hours later. They are ready to refund the $$$ when, oh yeah, there is a $109 re-stocking fee because we opened it. WHAT!!!??? Yep, and it's impossible to get out of. We went to the store manager, and then to her manager, and then to her manager's manager. But no dice.

My problem is this: The idiot salesman told us that we would be able to install all of the progs no problem, and that everyting was cool whatever. Obviously, Apple is trying to get people to switch over to Mac. I want to switch. But then you get one and you find out that developers are just not supporting Mac, and you would think Apple would do the best they can to make it easy for the consumer. But no, if you take it back they charge a 10% re-stocking fee.

Anyway, I'm saying all this stuff to the store manager, and an idea pops into my head. "Hey", I said, "Why not give me $109 credit towards the purchase of an iPod." She was like, "ummmm.....OK" Woo-hoo! I got my iPod brand new for $109 bucks off!!!!

Of course, my wife is still pissed 'cause now she has to keep looking for a lappy. (But that didn't last long, she found a PC she loves)

What are your thoughts on Apple?

Gmail Contact Groups!

Finally Gmail has contact groups! If you click on the "Contacts" link in your gmail (it sits right above the gtalk on the left side), you'll see that you can now create contact groups so that you send one email and it goes to all the people in the group. Most of you might remember we had a problem with this because when we decided to send daily emails to our blog members, we had to create a nikak google group and then forward our blog stuff to it, which then mailed all the members of the google group. What a mess! But it did the job (: Well all that is over with this great useful feature finally added to Gmail! Hooray for Gmail!

For all you stalkers out there

I couldn't resist not putting this one. Not that I was searching for anything like that... you know just accidentally found a link to this site...! Right. Now to the main point. For all you stalkers (Goga! lol), I ran into this website called Stalkerati which searches for images on all the big name network sites (MySpace, Facebook, etc) and other things as well (such as web searches). A lot of the network ones require a login of course, but then if you're an experienced stalker, you probably have not just one but a few accounts on all of those! hehe. Enjoy! And try not to get caught.

Streaming music using iTunes

Alrighty! Many of you have known me for a long time and have gone through my different phases of streaming music online such as using Shoutcast and of course the great Hamachi VPN. Now the latest was nice because iTunes already supplied users access to the shared music on LAN and since Hamachi created a "Virtual Lan" (VPN) we could listen to eachother's music easily! Just had to get on Hamachi. Well this application might make it even easier!

Introducing MyTunesRSS. This application runs a server on the users machine which basically allows you to access your iTunes music and listen to it from anywhere as long as you can access your computer. Naturally all the port forwarding rules apply, but it's pretty much like shoutcast, but instead of Winamp you're using iTunes. Not that I have anything against using Winamp - that player has been my greatest ally for so long. I just like using iTunes because of its ability to sort out music nicely. Anyways! Check out MyTunesRSS and see what you think! Also let us know if you run a server so we can try to connect! I might run one sometime once I get settled in somewhere (who knows where that'll be).

Funny yet at the same time serious possible eBay fraud

Apparently some guy sold a broken laptop on eBay, while advertising it as fully functioning and adding on to the specs false information. Well this is according to the person who bought it. Apparently the seller didn't even bother formatting his hard drive and when the buyer checked it he found a lot of "interesting information" on it. So he went ahead and posted all that on the webpage. This case is being investigated by the british police because apparently the seller (Amir) wants the site to be taken down (I wonder why), meanwhile the buyer says he will do it only if Amir refunds him the laptop. Anyways check out the article and the website it self. It's pretty interesting, amusing and warning all at the same time:

Also the buyer created another site for all those who would like to comment. He put some funny stuff there too. Check out the very first post on the site (it has 690 comments!) and the comments are hillarious.

::weird question:: fishing for responses...

So I don't know if this will get any replies, but it at least will let you guys know where my mind has been lately. I only bring this up for an interesting discussion and because I just dropped a crapload of cash on it. Also, it helps me to summarize all that I've been studying and get some other perspective. I hope this forum is okay for this type of discussion....

I've been learning more and more about investing/stock market stuff lately, and I think we're on the verge of something interesting in America. Americans are up to their eye-balls in debt, both housing and credit cards. Companies are just as bad. Meanwhile the european and chinese economies are on the rise. There are almost twice as many americans in their fifties than in their twenties, and the fifty-somethings will start to retire in 2007. It will be a major burden on the stock market and gov't as those ppl withdraw from 401k's or Social Security (an expected 20 billion a month withdrawal).

Combine that with the strength of the euro and the yen, and you can start to see a major downturn of the american economy taking shape. All of the factors are in place and it's already starting. The american stock market goes up and down in 40 year cycles, and it's time to decline for a while.

So what do you guys think? Did I convice you and possibly myself that this is what is happening?

Feel free not to respond or even read this post....just fishing i guess for some validation.
