Slashdot had this link on their page today about another announcement on Novell layoffs. It appears I remember posting something of this sort not too long ago on this same blog... Are they doing THAT bad?

It seems that Novells bet on Suse and that it's going to take off didn't fly. Or at least still struggling to fly.
In my opinion they need to change their business policy and innovate instead of sticking to same old business model that had always worked [not any more though]. Like back in the day whatever the guys name was that turned it around and said that they are going to sell netware type of stuff to connect people even though Novell was using it as an inside the company communication.
It's time to turn around while they still have the time. With Web 2.0 coming more close to being a reality that's where the future is. Of course they need to keep their server department but don't base everything solely on that. Instead explore and get on the ajax bandwagon or something.
It used to be a great company but it's sad to see it die so miserable just because of inability to overcome corporative model of making business.

I just talked to a friend at the fitness center at Novell. They said they had a flu shot day scheduled for all Provo Novellers, but some big suit came down and told them to re-schedule the day, and order 20% fewer flu shots!!!
Major crap is always going on down there....I speak from first-hand experience. (laid-off 2 years ago)

Holy cow 20% less. Man are they on a roll! As SCO became the "evil company from Utah" I was hoping that Novell would be the exact opposite and rise up, but it seems like they're not really going anywhere. We'll see if they can pull through.

Don't worry. Once they lay off 20%, they will hire another 25% to get ready for the next layoff. One big problem is they don't understand that they are not that big anymore. They still spend money like it's the 90's internet boom.
